“Silenced: The Hidden Story of Disabled Britain”
The event will start with a 1-hour BBC documentary (directed by Kate Scholefield) about the history of the disability movement in the United Kingdom. It features, among other, one of the founders of ENIL, John Evans and his journey from an institution to Independent Living. Even though the documentary is focused on the UK, it will be of interest to anyone wanting to know how disabled people fought for their rights, what stood in their way and how they see the future of disability activism.
The screening will be followed by short reflection by John Evans, and a discussion with other activists.

May 5th marks the European Day for Independent Living. And on this day each year the European Independent Living movement celebrates our common fights and victories.
This year Uloba – Independent Living Norway, the Independent Living Institute in Sweden and the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) will come together to arrange an open, international webinar. We will talk about our movement’s equality work in Europe in the past, the present and in the future. Together and through conversation we will get to know the history behind ENIL and learn more about the organization’s work to influence disability and equality politics in Europe today, both within and beyond the European Union. We also wish to take you on a virtual journey to examine the situation for disabled people throughout Europe today. We want to find out which issues are particularly important to us all right now and in the years to come. Finally, we want to examine how each one of us can contribute and make a difference.
